Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the long-run relationship between Research and Development expenditures (R&D) and economic growth in the 21 OECD countries over the period from 1990 to 2010 by utilizing the Pedroni and Kao panel cointegration, Pedroni DOLS and FMOLS and Canning-Pedroni causality methods. The cointegration test results show that there is a cointegration relationship between R&D and economic growth in the long run. By using Pedroni DOLS and FMOLS methods it is investigated the coefficients of long term cointegration results of variables. According to Panel DOLS and Panel FMOLS results the elasticity coefficient of R&D expenditure is %0.77, implying that a one percent increase in R&D expenditure among the 21 OECD countries will bring about a %0.77 percent increase in economic growth in the long run. While the results of Lamda-Pearson statistics indicate the long-run bilateral causality between R&D expenditures and economic growth, Group statistics indicate the long-run unidirectional causality from economic growth to R&D expenditures. It is concluded that there is a strong cointegration relationship between R&D expenditures and economic growth.
