Upcycling Potential and Technical Analysis of Agricultural Waste in Sakarya Province

A technical analysis report prepared by the Sakarya Economic and Social Research Center (SESAM) with the support of the East Marmara Development Agency (MARKA) reveals the enormous potential of Sakarya to integrate agricultural waste into the economy. It is projected that the approximately 480,000 tons of corn, hazelnut, and wheat waste generated annually in the province could generate an economic value of 850 million TL through advanced recycling using modern biorefinery methods. This process aims to produce high value-added strategic products ranging from bioplastics and nanocellulose to activated carbon and biofuels. Fully compliant with the European Green Deal, this circular economy model minimizes environmental risks in waste management, opens new income opportunities for farmers, and aims to position Sakarya as a regional hub for sustainable industry and green technology.
